Comment: Once again my colleagues made a fantastic recommendation for a yearend reading gift for my CEO
group.

After reading Mortenson's book, I felt as though I must be the only person in
the world not aware of the work he has been doing. How did I miss it?

Failing to make
it to the top of K2, getting lost on the way down, and being rescued by a Pakistani man was the
serendipity found only in the stuff of fairy tales; yet it happened and certainly the world is a
better place for it.

It seems to me that Mortenson has single-handedly put the lie to
the ugly American by taking care to learn the customs, language and needs of the people he chose to
serve. The many bureaucratic roadblocks, political sidetracks, lack of funds and weather delays did
not keep Mortenson from moving forward with his pledge to build a school. And then another. And then
a couple more until now 100's have been provided.

"Here (in Pakistan and Afghanistan),
we drink three cups of tea," said Haji Ali, Korphe Village Chief, Karakoram Mountains, Pakistan.
"The first you are a stranger, the second you become a friend, and the third, you join our family,
and for our family we are prepared to do anything - even die." Mortenson became family to many of
the far-flung village people in Pakistan and now Afghanistan. As he has demonstrated that he would
risk his life for them, they in turn have shown a willingness to protect him and guide him through
the challenges of trying to help those for whom few are willing to speak.

This book is
a compelling read and difficult to put down. It is both an adventure story and a testament to the
good that a determined compassionate person can accomplish with the right amount of love and
determination. It shows, in a non-partisan way, the path we must take to work for peace and
marginalize the extremists on all sides of the discontent and modern terrorist story. This is a must
read book for anyone interested in understanding what is going on in the global community today.

Summary: Read This Book!
Comment: Yes the writing is a little schmaltzy, but the story is so transcendent and important that it
wouldn't matter who'd have written it - it's the message, not the medium. Mortensen is a true hero,
someone whom we should all know about. This is the triumph of good over evil and it blew away even
the most hardcore of all cynics - me!

Summary: A wonderful read and an eye opener
Comment: A book that is a must read for anybody who wants to understand how to not only improve the quality
of life for future poverty-ridden generations in Pakistan, but also to bridge the gap between
civilizations that has only increased in a post 9/11 world.

Summary: The true story of a real hero!
Comment: It is amazing what one man can do. If only our government could understand the message in this book
and instead of using money for bombs, bring education to the children in the areas of the world
we're fighting.

Summary: Give this book to everyone you know
Comment: I've just finished Three Cups of Tea and, like others, am moved by Greg's story. I would encourage
everyone who reads this book to tell everyone you know about it, buy a copy for them, pass your copy
on if you can't afford to buy one for everybody, bring up the topic at dinner, direct everybody you
know to [...], basically SPREAD THE WORD. This guy is doing amazing stuff that we are all capable
of. It especially important for Americans to read this book. If anyone else is like me, I don't
trust the media as far as I can throw them. This being said, I try to stay away from the news
because I don't feel that it provides an accurate view of world affairs. After reading Three Cups of
Tea, I feel I have a better understanding of the events and reasons that led to the events prior to
and post 9/11. I also feel that I have begun to understand a culture that has been subject to much
unfair negativity. As Americans we are a bit sheltered, I feel, from the rest of the world and we
rely too heavily on mainstream news media to get educated about people and places overseas. It's
books like this that help to fully reveal what mainstream news media cannot. I am incredibly
inspired and moved by Greg's courage. He had no idea what he was doing and let his heart lead him,
or so it seems. This is a lesson that we, as a people, can all benefit from no matter who we are and
what baggage our national heritage may carry. READ IT and then pass it on.
