“The night they killed our neighbors, we never heard a thing.”

In a quiet suburban neighborhood, in a house only one door away, a family is brutally murdered for no apparent reason. And you think to yourself: It could have been us. And you start to wonder: What if we’re next?

Linwood Barclay, critically acclaimed author of No Time for Goodbye, brings terror closer than ever before in a thriller where murder strikes in the place we feel safest of all. Promise Falls isn’t the kind of community where a family is shot to death in their own home. But that is exactly what happened to the Langleys one sweltering summer night, and no one in this small upstate New York town is more shocked than their next-door neighbors, Jim and Ellen Cutter. They visited for the occasional barbecue and their son, Derek, was friends with the Langleys’ boy, Adam; but how well did they really know their neighbors?

That’s the question Jim Cutter is asking, and the answers he’s getting aren’t reassuring. Albert Langley was a successful, well-respected criminal lawyer, but was he so good at getting criminals off that he was the victim of revenge—a debt his innocent family also paid in blood? From the town’s criminally corrupt mayor to the tragic suicide of a talented student a decade before, Promise Falls has more than its share of secrets. And Jim Cutter, failed artist turned landscaper, need look no further than his own home and his wife Ellen’s past to know that things aren’t always what they seem. But not even Jim and Ellen are ready to know that their son was in the Langley house the night the family was murdered.

Suddenly the Cutters must face the unthinkable: that a murderer isn’t just stalking too close to home but is inside it already. For the Langleys weren’t the first to die and they won’t be the last.

Another Fine Thriller By a New Master

To begin with, "Too Close To Home" is nowhere near his previoius novel - "No Time For Goodbye" - but that's not a fair comparison because his last novel was one of the best thrillers I've ever read.

His latest effort starts with an interesting premise and keeps twisting and turning right up until the end. A young boy, hiding in the crawlspace of his neighbors house while they are on vacation is trapped there when they return suddenly the same day they leave. While trapped, he hears them addressed by a strange voice and then 3 shots ring out - killing the entire family. What could have been a straight story told from the boy's perspective quickly switches gears (and narration) to focus on the boy's father and most of the twists in this case are unexpected.

I cannot wait to see what Linwood Barclay does next because his "good" efforts are better than most thriller writers "best" efforts today!

Awful, awful, awful

I can't understand how this book received such good ratings. This was my 1st experience with this author and I think the writing is just awful!
I am a big fan of Tess Gerritsen and Jeffrey Deaver and thought I might enjoy this story, but I couldn't get through it. Definitely not something I would recommend.

THE NIGHT THEY KILLED OUR NEIGHBORS, WE NEVER HEARD A THING"

Experienced and excellent best describes narrator Christopher Lane. He has read more than 150 audio books - thus, you name the genre and he can personify it. He's taken home an Audie Award and an Audiofile Earphones Award - with Too Close To Home he takes listeners on an 11 hour journey as psyches are probed and the unthinkable happens.

Promise Falls is a small town in upstate New York. It's unlike other towns in that area as a triple murder has just been committed, a family is shot to death in what should have been the safety of their home. It was a hot, steamy summer night when the Langley's and their son, Adam, died. Despite the proximity of their homes and the stillness of the night their next-door neighbors, Jim and Ellen Cutter did not hear a thing.

The Cutters believed they knew their neighbors; their sons had been friends; they shared neighborhood gatherings. All of Promise Falls was shocked by this heinous crime, unable to comprehend how it could have happened. If the entire populace is stunned, think how the Cutters might have felt? What is going through their minds?

Author Barclay has crafted a compelling psychological journey. Might Jim Cutter be wondering if the killers had gone to the wrong house, fearing what might happen next? As for Ellen, what of her? Has she kept things from both Jim and herself?

Another explosive page-turner from Linwood Barclay.

Good story, a little long in the tooth with the f--- word. Seems that is in almost every sentence. Outcome, a mixed bag. Moral to the story is to better know the folks you deal with.

Not Quite As Good

After reading all the rave reviews, I began to wonder if maybe I am just having an off period when nothing seems to impress me. Nevertheless, my impression of Too Close to Home is that it is not quite up to the same standard as No Time For Goodbyes. One of the things that put me off about this book was the judgmental attitude of the leading character, Jim Cutter. It was like, when anyone else did wrong in his eyes he judged them harshly, but when he did something wrong it was justified. Irregardless, I just couldn't get into this novel the way I did No Time for Goodbyes. I will read more from this author though as he is a good writer. I just didn't care for this one too much.
