Editorial Reviews
Unabridged 2 CD MP3 set. Some failures lead to phenomenal successes, and this American nurse's unsuccessful attempt to climb K2, the world's second tallest mountain, is one of them. Dangerously ill when he finished his climb in 1993, Mortenson was sheltered for seven weeks by the small Pakistani village of Korphe; in return, he promised to build the impoverished town's first school, a project that grew into the Central Asia Institute, which has since constructed more than 50 schools across rural Pakistan and Afghanistan. Coauthor Relin recounts Mortenson's efforts in fascinating detail, presenting compelling portraits of the village elders, con artists, philanthropists, mujahideen, Taliban officials, ambitious school girls and upright Muslims Mortenson met along the way.

An excellent story that captures your attention and doesn't let go until the last word is read. Truly illustrates how one man's vision can change the shape of the world--if we pay attention and follow his example.

A whole new perspective!

If I had not belonged to a book club, I don't think I would have chosen this book on my own. By not doing so, I would have missed out tremendously on understanding the core concerns and issues in the Middle East from a non-violent approach. I am an educator and I was so unbelievably touched by Greg Mortenson's Mission to build schools so that children, especially girls, can be educated to think on their own, and not allow themselves to be brainwashed by rheteric and extremist views and interpretations of the Koran. Greg Mortenson's journey and efforts to fund raise in America to help the poor villages in Pakistan and Afghanistan were right on the mark...completely unselfish and so of a true humanitarian. His work is of perseverance and determination to deal with the "war on terror" through the power of knowledge and education and not weapons. I was beyond touched . His wife is amazing to endure so many months away from her husband so that he can promote his peace . I admired her strength and ability to believe in his efforts.
I loved this book and even bought it for my husband. I have shared it with so many friends and they are interested too. I learned more about the Islamic culture and people of Pakistan that it made me want to go and learn more. Though I know I can help by simply providing monetary support. I have a total new perspective about what is going on in the middle east and will continue to pay attention to key issues and not allow myself to be so isolated in thought to believe the US government is handeling it appropriately. The writer, David Relin is very talented and makes the story so vivid, as if one is with Greg following his every step and thoughts.... I recommend this book with multiple stars.....
