Only buy this phone if you intend to use it for skype-to-skype calls. It works bad with to landlines and hardly audible with mobiles in the US. If just for skuype-to-skype, it is brilliant, hands free feature is excellent and very good in the dock - just know what you want it for!!

Durability issues

I have been using this telephone for about 10 months. It was easy to setup, has a number of useful features, adequate construction and battery life, and worked very well for the first 6 months. Then I started hearing complaints from people I would be talking to on the phone about not being able to hear me. A few weeks later the telephone started to crash. The on/off key would not respond and the battery needed to be taken out and reinserted to restart the phone. This is now happening after each telephone conversation. I can see from the reviews that other users have also encountered problems. With my busy life, the price of this product does not justify spending time on repairs and shipping, however, this price is also high enough to cause frustration and disappointment: one would expect at least 12 months of flawless and carefree operation.

Do NOT buy this product. Revised: Works okay.

I have used the phone for 3 months now. I regret every minute of it.
1. Battery, despite being a lithium-ion type of 900mAh, can not last a day. Brand new.
2. Takes forever to find my wifi and sign in.
3. Once in, I can call out, but people using skype can not call in. And when it does come in, it is a miracle. I would rate the success chance is that of 10%. Tested over several weeks with my relatives in several cities in China.
4. Reported the issue to Netgear, they asked me to refer to Skype! Hah hah, what does a failed product has to do with Skype is beyond me. I have Linksys cit-400(one handset failed on me) and Philips VOIP841 (highly recommand) in my household and they never dropped a skype or line call. And they connect right away.
5. Sound is weak. Both ringing and sound volume is low. Hope you are not old or hard of hearing. Oh, there is no speakerphone either.

I wish I would have returned it when I had the chance. The sad part is that I got 2 of them!!! I am still going through the Netgear web support in an effort to say if they will respond after they attempted to "pass the buck" to skype. Great service, netgear, so far, .... NOT.

Update 03/2010:
Upon complaining to Netgear via writing, I was provided an RMA #. Sent the defective item back and got a replacement handset. So far, so good. It does not have the latest firmware (don't upgrade). Much better and reliable. It can find wifi and receive calls. It has been over 3 months now, so far so good. Thus, I am amending my rating to a 3.

Battery power info was a lie

The battery life is horrible. After a few hours it shuts itself off if you dont use it. I was using it at home so I wouldnt have to go to the computer to take calls and it sometimes seemed that it was unreliable. Overall I like the concept of the phone. It is definitely not worth the $300 I paid for it though. For that kind of unreliability and battery problems, it is worth under $100.

Great Skype handset

Having a great time with Skype, now that it is not tethered to a computer. This way the phone sits on a desk, just like a regular phone, and I answer as needed. It also roams about the house which is nice. Very reliable (as long as the internet is up) and I had no trouble logging onto my own household wireless network.
